I committed many mistakes in Dream Girl - Nikita Dutta

In a short span of four years, Nikita Dutta has dabbled in modelling, anchoring, film and now TV fiction. Currently she is doing her second show EkDujeKeVaaste. We caught her in a cheery mood and got into a conversation with her. Here are the edited excerpts from the interview:

How is your Sony TV show doing??

Amazing response keeps us going. Suman is a self- righteous, confident orphan who runs a catering business. At home she is a bit mellow for she is in debt to her relatives.I am having superb on and off- screen equation with all my co–stars including male lead Namik Paul.

However your show has not yet rocked the TRP charts?

A show should not be judged solely on ratings, critical acclamations also matters. Have we not seen cases where 100 crore films are not highly regarded while those which did not gross big are remembered for years to come.  Also you need to understand that viewership patterns are equally important. Sony we all know has a different audience base.

You juggle many hats at the same time, how do you see your growth as an artist?

When I first started back in 2012 (Miss India finalist), I did not even know how to pose in front of the camera. This beauty pageant got me anchoring assignments first for Zoom TV, and then STAR Sports(Cricket World Cup 2014). My VJ bit helped me a lot as it made me very comfortable with the camera; you also learn to think on your feet. Next movie Lekar Hum DeewanaDil (2014) happened followed by TV..

Every actor endures a struggle?

I did not see too much, except for a six to seven months gap between my above film and my debut on small screen with the show Dream Girl - EkLadkiDeewani Si on Life OK. As an actor you need to be prepared.  Impatience compels you to take wrong decisions. I have also made a conscious  decision to stay away from the saasbahu brigade.

Your take on the TV industry?

At first I was not sure if I will be able to cope up with the rigours of twelve hour shoots. Post Dream Girl it is not that tough any more. Also as it was my first show, I did commit many mistakes but also got a chance to experiment with another form of acting as well.  One of the high points while I was doing that show was when my fans would write to me saying they have got an encouragement seeing my small town character Lakshmi struggle and finally succeed in her goal to become an actor.

Your B- Town detour did not work?

I am more remembered with my TV characters as finally success alone counts. But no regrets, thanks to the above stint with Arman Jain, now I can rightfullyboast that I have also worked in Bollywood as well.  I don’t know what went wrong .We did try to make a good product, with talented production house (Saif Ali Khan was the co-producer), director and great music. All said and done, I enjoyed the entire process making few great friends.

Surviving in TV vs. films?

TV is easier if you are not choosy about your roles. Films are tough as industry is already full of talent. Family surname can make your cinema struggle less tough.

Would you want to get back to films?

At some point in the future yes. But right now my days are blocked with my current assignments.

Since you are doing shows on channels which are not very popular, will it help to defeat the fear of exposure which prevents many TV actors from crossing over to films?

It all depends on luck and hard work.Sushant Singh Rajput became a film star despite doing the super hit Zee TV show PavitraRishta. YamiGautam on the other hand also clicked despite the fact that no one saw Chand KePaarChalo andRaajkumarAaryyan.
